The MMA gods awarded us with some great fights this past weekend and some interesting news this week. Check out below to see what you missed!
Shevchenko vs. Pena On Fox Highlights
Francis Ngannou continued his destruction of the Heavyweight division this past Saturday. Andrei Arlovski looked to stay relevant in the title picture, but showed nothing that surprised Ngannou. Arlovski got rocked early in the first round, and Francis Ngannou finished him with some devastating ground and pound. After the fight, Ngannou called for a fight with Junior Dos Santos or Alistair Overeem.
In the Co-Main event, Cerrone looked to continue his win streak in the welterweight division. Jorge Masvidal has been rotating wins and losses, and lots of people were looking past him in this fight. Early on in the first round, it was noticable that Masvidal was getting the better of Cerrone on the feet. At the end of the first round, Masvidal rocked Cerrone and followed up with some ground and pound. The referee jumped in at the same time the round ended. Many people like myself, thought the fight had been stopped. Luckily for Cerrone, the referee decided that the round had indeed ended. When round 2 started, Masvidal put early pressure on Cerrone. It wouldn’t take long before Masvidal had Cerrone rocked again, and after many unanswered strikes, the referee stopped it.
In the Main- Event, 2 women Bantamweights went to battle to see who would get the next shot at Amanda Nunes. Valentina Shevchenko came into the fight with her lone loss in the UFC coming to Amanda Nunes by decision. Julianna Pena was also riding some hype as she won her season of The Ultimate Fighter and was undefeated in the UFC.
In the first round, Pena found early success with landing knees in the clinch against the cage. Shevchenko capitalized on this and was able to land 2 take-downs from that position. The round ended with Pena threatening with an Armbar. During the second round, Juianna was able to land a take-down early. This is where most people expected Pena to excel. Shevchenko threatened with a high guard then attacked with an armbar. Penna looked to defend it but eventually ended up tapping. With the victory, Valentina Shevchenko will face Amanda Nunes for the Bantamweight Championship.
50 Gs Baby
There was no Fight of the Night, but the UFC awarded out 4 Performance of the Night winners.
Valentina Shevchenko- No surprise after her submission out of nowhere. People only thought her chance of winning the fight was on the feet.
Jorge Masvidal- This man deserved that extra 50k and possibly even a Diaz brother next.
Francis Ngannou- With addition to the extra money in this mans pocket, hopefully he gets a number 1 contender fight next.
Jason Knight- Jason made quite the splash Saturday night with his submission win over Alex Caceres. Even though he was a small favorite, I just didn’t see it coming.
CM PUNK Wants a Fight
CM Punk is in the MMA news yet again. He has stated that he is trying as hard as he can to get another fight in the UFC. If this were to occur, would they bring in another MMA newcomer as well? His only opponent has gone on to have a successful career as of late, so that goes to show that he didn’t lose to some chump.
Chad “Money” Mendes Shines
Many people may not know this, but Chad Mondes competed and won this weekend. Although he is known for his wrestling skills and knockout power, he competed in Submission Undergound 3. The promotion matches MMA fighters up with some of the best jiu-jitsu practitioners. Chad Mendes came into the match as an underdog against Jeff Glover. Neither fighter was able to find a submission, and the match was forced into overtime. Glover was able to tap Mendes out in the first 35 seconds of overtime, but the rules allowed Mendes to attempt to beat that time. Surprisingly, Mendes was able to sink in a Rear-Naked-Choke and get the victory quicker.
