What a fun week we had in the MMA world this past week. Do you think you missed any of the action? Check out below to see!
In the Co-Main event of the night, Paul Daley continued to make noise outside of the UFC. Daley landed a nasty elbow and then a flying knee that had his opponent Brennan Ward out. During the post fight interview, Daley stated that he could knock out Rory MacDonald. That could be a great fight if it comes to be.
In the Main-Event, Bellator looked to have 2 UFC vets past their prime fight. Tito Ortiz was hoping for a successful retirement fight, as past ones for him have not gone his way. Chael Sonnen was making his Bellator debut after a long suspension. Building up to the fight, Sonnen was his iconic Bad Boy self and that is propbably one of the reasons these two earned Main-Event Status.
Early in the first round, Tito went for a takedown and Sonnen took this oppurturnity to attempt a D’arce choke. Depending on who you ask, some may say Tito tapped during the choke. When Chael abandoned the choke, the rest of the fight was all Tito. Sonnen got mounted and then gave up his back. Tito went for a rear naked choke, and although it didn’t look that dangerous, Chael Sonnen tapped. After the fight, Tito took the time to announce his retirement.
Bellator announced a rematch between Rampage Jackson and King Mo. The two will headline Bellator 175 which is scheduled for March 31st . This will be Rampage’s first fight back with Bellator after battling contract issues when he tried returning to the UFC. When Rampage and King Mo Lawal first fought, Rampage won an extremely close decision.
The Ultimate Fighter Returns
The UFC recently announced that new Bantamweight Champion Cody Garbrandt will coach against former champion TJ Dillashaw in the 25th season of TUF. The competitors this season will be cast members from former seasons. The fighters will compete in the welterweight division. There is expected to be a lot of drama between the two coaches as they are former teammates. It will be interesting to see who they bring with them to help coach.
The first fight has been announced for the UFC’s trip to Buffalo, New York. Chris Weidman ad Gegard Mousasi will fight in a title contender eliminator. Chris Weidman is currently on a 2 fight losing streak, and desperately needs a win here. Mousasi on the other hand is currently riding a 4 fight win streak, with his last loss coming to Urijah Hall which Mousasi later on avenged.
We Miss You Frank Mir
After being popped by USADA last year, Frank Mir has been staying busy outside of the octagon. Surprisingly, his children’s wrestling videos have gone viral after their recent success at a tournament. Although many expected after the suspension that Mir may retire, Frank Mir has stated that he is interested in returning to the UFC in 2018. I wonder where he will rank among the Top 15 then.
