Hey fight fans, it’s been a very interesting off week so far for The UFC. Although some things are still up in the air, I’ll do my best to decode what is really going on in MMA.
So The UFC may (or may not) start an official women’s flyweight division. It was announced as official yesterday by Fox Sports. Check out the article here —> www.foxsports.com
But, a few hours later Fox Sports came back and said it was not official. Apparently it is now under consideration. Check out the follow up article here —>www.foxsports.com.
Either way, the addition of the 125 pound women’s weight class is a necessary one. Certain fighters are undersized for 135 but can not cut all the way to 115. With the 145 pound weight class taking shape earlier this year, I fully expect the 125 pound announcement to happen again, sooner than later.
Today, UFC 213 added three blockbuster fights to it’s official line up. In light weight action, Jim Miller will take on former champion Anthony Pettis. This is a must win for Pettis who has lost four of his last five fights and was brutally finished in December by Max Holloway. Miller on the other hand has won three of his last four, dropping his most recent fight in February to Dustin Poirier.
A trilogy fight between Fabricio Werdum and Alistair Overeem was announced as well. Werdum won their first meeting in Pride back in 2006 by kimura. Overeem won their second fight by decision in 2011 in Strikeforce. Both fighters are coming off of wins, as Overeem defeated Mark Hunt by tko earlier this year and Werdum gained a decision over Travis Browne in a bizarre fight back in September. The winner will be close to a title shot, in the paper thin heavyweight division.
The final fight added to UFC 213 was Robbie Lawler VS Donald Cerrone. This fight was originally scheduled for UFC 205 in November. Both fighters were finished in their last outings as Lawler was ko’d by champ Tyron Woodley last year and Cerrone was tko’d by Jorge Masvidal in January. Both exciting fighters will look to rebound and start a path back towards the title. A win for either will put either guy back in the hunt quickly.
The Official UFC 213 Card so far looks like this,
Cody Garbrandt (c) vs. T.J. Dillashaw
Robbie Lawler vs. Donald Cerrone
Fabricio Werdum vs. Alistair Overeem
Anthony Pettis vs. Jim Miller
