A lot has been going on in MMA this week including new events scheduled, new signings and new bout agreements. In this edition of MMA Today, I’ll attempt to sort it all out one way or the other.
Today Bellator signed top 15 ranked bantamweight Michael McDonald. This comes weeks after McDonald requested his release from The UFC, due to poor treatment during contract negotiations. “Mayday” went 6-3 during his time as a mainstay in the organization. This is just the latest in a string of Bellator signing high profile fighters.
Speaking of Bellator signings, they also signed Lorenz Larkin last week. This week it was announced that Larkin will get an immediate title fight against reigning welterweight champ Douglas Lima. The fight will take place at Madison Square Garden as part of the “Bellator NYC” pay per view.
On the other end of the spectrum, The UFC made the Mark Hunt VS Derrick Lewis fight official for Fight Night 110 in New Zealand. Also signed for the event in an intriguing middleweight scrap between Derek Brunson and Daniel Kelly. Elsewhere Joseph Benavidez takes on Ben Nguyen and Ashkan Mokhtarian will go toe to toe with John Moraga. The event takes place June 11th on FS1.
Another story coming out of The UFC this week is Luke Rockhold challenging Fabricio Werdum. A lot of the media seems to think this is a ludicrous idea. However, I would be very curious to to see this fight. Interestingly, Werdum is only one inch taller and their reach is exactly the same. Although Rockhold would be fighting up two weight classes, he is naturally a bigger guy and it would be great to see more fighters fighting closer to their natural weight.
