The jury is out on Phil Brooks right now. Known as CM Punk, his long awaited debut is finally taking place this Saturday night.  The 37 year old Pro Wrestling Superstar has been training for 2 years for this fight and the world is curious. Will Punk bring the hurt or will he fizzle as all hype? We all saw Brock Lesnar's ascension through the UFC ranks, but today we take a look back at some other pro athletes who crossed over into the world of MMA, some successfully and some not so much.

Dave Bautista: Pass

Just like Punk, Bautista was a WWE superstar and World Champion. Back in 2012 Dave tried his hand in MMA. He won his MMA debut against Vince Lucero by TKO in the first round. Also similar to Punk, Dave trained at a highly respected MMA school, Gracie Tampa. It seems that this was a need to fulfil a dream or goal, as the former Pro Wrestling star was 43 when he fought and we have never heard anything about him fighting again.

Bobby Lashley: Pass

Amassing a record of 14 and 2 so far, Bobby has made a decent career of beating second rate heavyweights in MMA. Bobby also a former WWE superstar and World Champion had a great amateur wrestling background. He transitioned nicely into MMA and is expected to fight for Bellator MMA in October.

James Toney: Fail

Former Boxing World Champion James Toney thought MMA was going to be easy. He signed a one fight contract with The UFC. The only problem is, his one fight was against “Captain America” Randy Couture and we knew how that would end up. Randy dominated his larger opponent for most of the first round before submitting him by rear naked choke. The MMA world has never heard from Toney again.

Ray Mercer: Pass

Although “Merciless Ray” lost his debut by guillotine choke to Kimbo Slice, he really redeemed himself in his second outing by being the first man to Knock Out former UFC heavyweight champ Tim Sylvia. This fight took less than ten seconds. After winning against Sylvia, Ray announced he had signed with King Of the Cage, but that was back in 2010 and we haven't heard about him signing to fight anyone since.

Will CM Punk live up to some of his former co-workers cross over careers or will he crumble under the pressure of the Octagon. Check out on Saturday night for up to the minute results of UFC 203.
