Although most casual fight fans watch some of the major UFC pay per view and FOX shows and the occasional Bellator event on SPIKE, there is a whole other world of fighters out there. These are young scrappers fighting their way towards the big time, ‘chasing the dream’.
Ladies and Gentlemen, Fighting out of the red corner, weighing in at two hundred and five pounds and fighting out of St. Louis Missouri, he is…..”The Techno Viking” Julius Anglickas.
Julius is a Light Heavyweight prospect who trains at St Charles MMA. Originally from Lithuania, he moved to the United States eleven years ago. After winning all four of his amateur fights by stoppage, the six foot, three inch tall European turned pro. So how did he get involved in the fight game?
“In high school I was wrestling and doing Karate with Neko (San Lung Mui and G5 Studios). I got cut from the basketball team and that’s how I started wrestling. That was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. I didn’t think I’d become a fighter at all. In college I also wrestled and towards the end of it I didn’t want competition to stop. When I was in Missouri Baptist University, assistant coach Alp Ozkilic was a fighter and he introduced me to St Charles MMA. I tried going as much as I could but I had no car, school was a lot and I was still wrestling. When I graduated with my undergrad degree, I transferred to Lindenwood to finish my masters and be closer to the gym. There was no thought. I just knew it was a next step after wrestling.”
Sometimes in life inspiration can come from unlikely places, so which fighters did Julius look up to before becoming a pro fighter?
” I looked up to many fighters when i started getting closer to fighting and I kept looking up to different ones. But I think it all started from the Rocky movies. Someone laughed one time because Rocky is just a movie, but it was still a great figure to look up to when you need to do some training. The first MMA fighter that I was looking up to when I got into fighting was Nick Diaz.”
Julius won his first pro fight in violent fashion, a knock out in thirty seven seconds of the first round. As fate would have it, his next fight was cancelled and a different opportunity would present itself. A featured fight for Victory Fighting Championship which would air world wide, live on UFC Fight Pass. About this huge opportunity he said:
“To fight on UFC fight pass was very unexpected. My one fight was cancelled and the same day this opportunity came up and I wanted to do it without hesitation. It felt like the coolest thing ever. I always think that I’ll never make big, but I just work hard and I let things take care of themselves naturally and good things come when I work hard. Besides being on fight pass, it was also a very good organisation called Victory FC. It’s always nice to fight in front of big crowds. Plus I know that my opponents are very prepared and push me to the limits.”
That fight was against an experienced Duke Roufus trained fighter named Cameron Olson. After a very successful first round, Julius seemed to slow down and ended up losing by submission. Although losing is never the goal, sometimes it can be for the best. Anglickas learned a few things from his first defeat.
“I learned that maybe I need to be little more patient and not go crazy so much. Fifteen minutes is a long time, especially if I can’t finish the guy so quick like I used to. At higher levels, everyone is good and I would definitely have to regulate the speed a little more. Besides that I just messed up. Next time I’ll do everything the same and maybe just slow down a little.”
Like something straight out of one of the Rocky movies, Julius’ is asked to leave his gym sometimes because he spends too much time there.
“I train with St Charles MMA. The coaches are Mike Rogers and Matt Ricehouse, Also I received a lot of help from Quinton O’Brien. I train there every day. Sometimes Mike needs to kick me out and tell me to go rest and not come back for few days.”
At twenty five years of age Julius future is bright in the fight game, but he also is well prepared for his post career. He has his masters in teaching physical education. He has an older brother and a half sister. At the moment beside training and fighting works as security on the weekends. So who is Julius the man, not the fighter?
“Some hobbies I use to have, I use to draw and do some crafts. Neko always made fun of it and said something like “hands that kill people also make beautiful art” or something like that. Now all my energy is into training, so on free time I make food all day or sleep when I can. I always make same thing like chicken with sweet potatoes and vegetables. I keep it simple but healthy all the time. I’m a big fan of all you can eat sushi. OMG, I go to those a lot here (laughs). I also like movies but sometimes I don’t even know what to watch. Before my fights I always watch something to keep my mind off of fighting. It could be the most random movies. Sometimes cartoons or it could be movies about fighting or war. My military friend said I picked those war movies for a reason without knowing it, because those movies had struggle in them and they survived at the end. I guess subconsciously I picked them because that’s what it will feel like on fight day. Some shootouts I’d like to make are of course to all my main coaches Mike Rogers, Matt Ricehouse, and Quinton O’Brien. Also one of the bigger mentors is Jose “Shorty” Torres. He just won the title for TitanFC. Also Neko, who I’ve known since high school and all the training started with him.”
So before we wrap this up, the question on everyone’s mind is…….How did Julius become known as “The Techno Viking”? We all remember the Youtube video of the Techno Viking, well apparently Julius can break dance. Besides that the explanation is-
“I got the name techno Viking from the Muay Thai group “Art of 8″, I train with them on Saturdays. My boxing coach called me Viking but not techno Viking. I had no idea that this is my name now. We (Samogitian*- a certain people in Lithuania) fought against Vikings so it could bring some confusion.”
