Welcome to the first edition of The Best Bet. Throughout the year we will be tracking our bets, and hopefully we will all be able to help each other make some money. Check out below to see who our money is on.
Darren Elkins vs
Darren Elkins enters this fight hoping to get his 6th win in a row. Darren Elkins currently holds a record of 23-5 in his MMA career and 13-4 inside of the UFC. This will be his 16th time competing inside the Featherweight division.
Michael Johnson has spent his entire MMA career in the Lightweight division and this will be his first time attempting to drop down to the Featherweight division. Johnson entered the UFC with a record of 8-4 but is now currently 17-12. Out of his last 5 fights inside the octagon, Johnson has only found success once, and it resulted in a first round TKO against highly ranked Dustin Poirier. With a win over Darren Elkins, Johnson hopes he will earn himself a #1 contender match in his new division.
Elkins is currently ranked #10 in the Featherweight division while Johnson is currently #10 in the Lightweight division. This will be a true test for both fighters. Since making the move to Team Alpha Male, Elkins has looked like one scary dude. They don’t call him “The Damage” for nothing. Since he surrounds himself with amazing wrestlers and hard hitters, I doubt anything Michael Johnson brings to the table will be much of a surprise. Elkins should be able to defend the takedowns and punish Johnson in the clinch. Look for the weight cut to take its toll on Johnson while Elkins continues his win streak.
Pick: Darren Elkins @ +135 (2 Units)
Uriah Hall vs Vitor Belfort
Although Hall and Belfort both won their last fight, before that, they both found themselves on losing streaks.
With Belfort recently announcing this will be his final fight inside the octagon, it gives that much more reason to lean towards the favorite Uriah Hall. Belfort has been stopped inside the octagon 4 times in the past 2 ½ years. It has shown he can’t take a strike like he once was able to. Belfort will enter this fight as 7 years the elder with 19 more fights than his opponent.
Both fighters are known for their deadly striking, but I believe it’ll be Hall that lands with devastation first. Since Hall is above a 3-1 favorite currently, the smart pick for this fight would be stoppage inside the first 2 rounds.
Pick: Uriah Hall Inside the Distance (3 Units)
Jeremy Stephens vs Dooho Choi
In the Main-Event, we have two hard hitting Featherweights looking to get one step closer to a title shot. Dooho Choi has a record of 14-2 with 11 of those victories coming by KO/TKO. Jeremy Stephens enters this fight as the more experienced fighter, as he holds a record of 26-14 inside his MMA career with 16 of those victories coming by way of KO/TKO.
Stephens has won 6 out of his past 11 fights inside the featherweight division. Choi is coming off his first loss in the UFC, but entered that fight having finished his past 8 opponents. In Choi’s last fight, him and Cub Swanson put on a Fight of the Year that fans won’t shortly forget. Choi eventually lost that fight by Unanimous Decision. If Choi tries to have a slug fest with Stephens, this may result in an early night for the young Korean fighter.
This will be Choi’s first 5 rounder, whereas Stephens last fought in a n5 round war in 2014 against Cub Swanson. Jeremy Stephens should be durable enough to outlast Choi in the opening rounds, which is where Choi has shown most of his success. After the second round, look for Stephens to impose his will, and add another vicious stoppage to his resume.
Pick: Jeremy Stephens @+130 (2 Units)
